Spirit Guides: What if we could CHOOSE them?

gothic, fantasy, fantasy girl-1317139.jpg

Oh My God you guys… I just had the craziest most wonderful thought! What if we could all choose our spirit guides!? What if we could handpick the spirits (living or dead) who we could call on in our times of stress, doubt or indecision to lead us down the right path? What if we could summon their energy to talk us out of a funk or encourage us to be our baddest bitch selves?

Wait…what’s a spirit guide?

Okay. Let me back up here a second and start from the beginning. A spirit guide is a spirit being who follows you through life steering you in the right direction. They are the voices of your intuition. They love you completely and unconditionally. They help connect you to The Universe and keep you in touch with the endless love the Universe has for you!

Depending on you who you ask, a spirit guide can be a being of pure energy – a light being who does not and has never held a human form –  or they can be a loved one or ancestor who has passed over and is now watching over you. I personally believe that they are beings of all forms, animal, human, galactic being, who has been cosmically drawn to you to help you navigate your human experience.

My Spirit Guides

I’ve met my spirit guides a few times in deep meditation. I have a few. Three of them are beings of earth energy; they appear to me as brightly coloured light; green, blue and purple –  and they mostly come to me when I haven’t been in nature enough. They tend to come to me as a group and urge me to breathe some fresh air and go for a hike or swim in the sea.

I also have two ancestors who come to me. One feels like he is connected to my Dad’s side of the family and the other, my mother’s. They feel very human but also very wise – as if they lived a very long time ago.

The man is very thin and wears a dark cloak – which is kinda spooky because most of my relatives on my Dad’s side mentioned seeing a man in a dark cloak when they were on their death bed!

The woman is cuddly and kind and has a permanent soft smile on her face as if she is very happy just to watch me live my life. I don’t know who she is but I love her and it’s nice having her around.

But, the truth is, my spirit guides are a little boring (sorry guys!) they never really have much to say and when I call upon them for guidance they give me cryptic advice like “the power is in you” and “there is nothing wrong with you”.

If I could choose my spirit guides

So I got to thinking. What if I could choose my own spirit guides?! Who would I chose to have with me at all times to call on for advice? And you know what? I knew immediately who my team of powerful guides would be. So without further ado let me introduce to you my all star line up of Spirit Guides!

Bob Ross

Bob Ross: 13 Facts About the Iconic Painter - Biography

It’s so important to do something every day that will make you happy.” – Bob Ross

OMG! Where has Bob been all my life!?

I only just discovered Bob Ross and his soothing 70s art tutorials. I was introduced by 11 year old who has apparently been watching Bob “for like, forever mum!” and I connected with him instantly. He is so full of love that you can feeling it flowing right out of him, through the screen and into your own heart. He is a gentle, kind, artist who just wants you to have a go at painting and have some fun. Personally I don’t really need to follow his tutorials, I’m just here for him. His videos are like fabulous ASMR sessions complete with scratchy brushes against canvas, the gentle slopping of water in a jar as he cleans his brush and topped off with Bob’s soothing, gentle, almost whispering voice as he announces the names of the colours on his palette.

“It’s hard to see things when you are too close. Take a step back and look.”

I was surprised to learn that before becoming an artist Bob was a first sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.  He was stationed at a base in Alaska where he became inspired to pain the snowy mountains around him. The military was such a harsh and forceful environment that when Bob left he vowed he would never again shout or raise his voice at anyone.

If Bob were my spirit guide I would be the next Divinci! He’d sit quietly by my side – not too close as he wouldn’t want to make me feel like I was being watched or judged. In fact, he might even be painting along side me just to make me feel like his focus isn’t totally on me. He’d mumble his calming encouragements like “C’mon let’s have some fun today” or “that’s it we’re just playin’ around, here” or “how about we give that tree a friend? That’s it. Those little guys love having some friends.” Or perhaps he’ll go off on one of his wonderful tangents as we paint, about how ‘money is positive energy and that’s why it’s good to get paid for your art. It’s not really about the money as such.’

“We don’t make mistakes. We just have happy accidents.”

But the best part would be when I lose my faith in my work. When my inner critic starts to say mean stuff to me about how my work stinks and a five year old could do better and how you can see the fear in each brush stroke. When those voices start up, Bob would say “hush now, we’re just having some fun here. We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” Then as tears of pure love trickled down my cheeks, I’d pick up my brush and keep on painting.

“This is your world

You’re the creator

Find freedom on this canvas

Believe, that you can do it,

‘Cuz you can do it.

You can do it.”

Louise Hay

Louise Hay Quotes and Affirmations : Spirituality and Beyond

Louise Hay is the super kind and gentle Grandma that everyone should have on their team. She’s wise, sassy, super clever (she created Hay House Publishing) but also loving and empathetic. In the 80s she created the Hay Rides – a healing opportunity for gay men diagnosed with AIDS to come together in a group to release the shame and self blame associated with the disease at the time.

Every thought we think is creating our future.

I first learned of Louise Hay through her book You Can Heal Your Life where she taught me the importance of choosing an attitude that attracts more positivity into my life. She taught me how to use positive affirmations to lift my moods. She taught me that negative emotions that we hold within can become trapped inside and create ‘dis-ease’ in our bodies. But the most important thing Louise Hay taught me was to love myself.

“You’ve been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.”

Whenever I’m sad I listen to her gentle voice on a YouTube video and I immediately feel calm and loved. Her voice is like hugs and hot chocolate and warm pyjamas after getting caught in the rain.

If Louise were my spirit guide she would give me a razz up! She’d make me cut all the crap that keeps me in a funk. Every time I complained and said “argh I hate my house! It’s messy AF!” she’d be on me like white on rice telling me to change my language. “In order to attract a nicer house you must first love the house you have.”  She’d remind me to be grateful to have a house to mess up in the first place and tell me that “a house messed up by family is a home where a loving family lives.”

How fabulous would it be to have someone to call upon at all times to simply remind you to be nicer to yourself? I think we could all benefit from having Louise Hay as a spirit guide.

“I say “Out” to every negative thought that comes to my mind. No person, place, or thing has any power over me, for I am the only thinker in my mind. I create my own reality and everyone in it.”

RuPaul

When I was a kid one of the perks of getting sick and staying home from school was that I got to watch the RuPaul show – a day time talk show in which he wore full drag! It was truly fabulous and always made me feel better.  But of course he went on create the one and only RuPaul’s Drag Race! One of the best shows ever to grace our screens. On top of that RuPaul is an actor, writer, singer and producer. He is constantly creating work. Constantly. I am so inspired by his energy.  I’m currently watching A.J and the Queen and it is amazing!

“We’re all born naked and the rest is drag.”

Just imagine the blissful life you would live if RuPaul were your spirit guide! I almost can’t even go there because it’s just so fabulous it’s like looking directly at the sun. If you were sad after a breakup he’d let you cuddle his chihuahua while he gently tells you in his juicy southern twang ‘girl, you are too damn pretty to be crying over a no good boy!’

He’d give you a sassy pep-talk like his character Robert did to his heartbroken friend Brian in A.J and the queen…

“Okay! T.V off! Get up! WWCD?… What would Cher do? Would she be all sad up in here lying on the couch? No she would not! Did she lay on the couch when her marriage ended and the Sonny and Cher Show was cancelled? No she did not! She went on to do the Cher show and it was… A SENSATION!”

When the going gets tough, the tough reinvent themselves!”

If you were having trouble with your eyeliner he’d be like ‘Okay girl, pass it to mama!” Before you knew it you’d have the most bangin’ makeover you’d EVER SEEN. In fact, with Ru as your spirit guide, you could probably become the best Beauty Vlogger of all time.

And OMG if you were sad because you couldn’t go to the ball to meet prince charming there would be a puff of smoke and RuPaul would appear in your room in full drag. He wouldn’t even need to use magic to make you an amazing gown because after all his years of creating drag costumes he could just whip you up a figure-hugging gown bedazzled with Swarovski crystals.

“You got this, girl!” Ru would say to me just before I went into every audition. “They are gonna love you!”

You may not get the role you auditioned for, but make a lasting impression and they’ll remember you for something else later.” – RuPaul

You can choose your own spirit guides

Some people may disagree with me but you know what, I say we can choose our own spirit guides! They may not be the “spirit guides” you are born with but there is absolutely no reason why people you love and admire can’t guide you through life!

From now on when I’m painting I will call in Bob Ross to be my guide and silence my inner critic. When I feel myself becoming negative I will remember the wise words of Louise Hay and change my attitude. I will channel RuPaul constantly, hearing his loving and sassy words encourage me to be my baddest self.

If you could choose your spirit guides who would you choose?! Please let me know!
